How to Turn Down an Acting or Modeling Job | Model Factory

You should turn down the modeling job if it could be detrimental to future prospects. Yes, getting acting and modeling jobs can be really tough. Actors and models invest so much in their careers by reading helpful books, taking classes, conducting private sessions, and attending seminars and webinars.

We go to countless auditions and go to book jobs. The idea of turning down a job seems like a crazy idea for actors and models. But, sometimes it is an important, necessary, and very wise decision.

Over the past 30 years and with over 1,200 bookings, there are only a few jobs I've turned down. And, I'm so glad I didn't accept those jobs. As difficult as this decision may be, sometimes you need to say no at all.

One of the jobs I got rejected was a great print ad. It had an important message and I was expecting it to be a very successful campaign. But, I didn't want to be the face of the advertisement.

The ad was about child abuse. People generally see child abusers as scary and frightening-looking people. In today's time, children need to be very careful. Even friendly, kind-looking boys like me can be victims of child abuse.

I turned down the job because I was worried that if my face was associated with child abuse, I would potentially lose a lot of work with any project involving children. I did ads with kids for companies like Crayola Crayons, Parents Magazine, and Toys 'R' Us, and I didn't want to take the chance of losing a lot of money with future jobs by accepting this booking.

A few months back I was asked to audition for a political position. It was a "man on the street" talking about a man running for Congress. I have done many political spots before. However, I found the copy in this TV spot so offensive that I refused to associate with and endorse this particular politician.

If you ever come across a project that goes against your beliefs or ethics, a job that may prevent you from working in the future, or anything you don't want to be involved in, it's really important that You say no

There are many actors and models who are vegetarian and will not advertise for fast food restaurants because they do not want to promote eating meat. Others may not advertise furs, alcohol, cigarettes, or lottery ads (due to their religious beliefs.)

Just make sure you tell your agent in advance that this isn't a project you want to work on before you attend the audition. You never want to audition, book a job, and then tell your agent that you've been thinking about it and have decided not to take the job. This makes the talent look unprofessional and puts the agent in a difficult position.

Agents may not be happy with your decision to turn down the job or audition. Because of your decision, they may lose money by a huge commission. However, they are professionals—as long as you explain your reasoning, they will (hopefully!) understand.

The most important thing to remember is that this is your life. It is so important that we follow our hearts and mind and make smart decisions that we can live with to the fullest even after our careers are over.
