How Do I Find Dance Auditions? - Modelfactory

Making it as a professional dancer means going out on a lot of auditions. If you have an agent, they can refer you to specific calls-but you don't have the representation to present yourself for dance gigs. To find dance auditions on your own, you can use online casting platforms like Backstage. We have been around for over 50 years, making us an established resource for finding auditions of all types, including dancers and choreographers. Backstage regularly posts new casting calls for dancers on Broadway and elsewhere.

But once you get the audition, what happens next? There are three main ways to book a dance audition: You can self-submit on a platform like Backstage, you can go to open calls, or an agent can submit to you.

Self-submitting:

Start by searching the casting notice on the platform of your choice. Backstage, you'll see that each one will see the type of production, the type of role, whether or not it is a paid job and if it is a union or non-federal job, its location, the age limit for the talent sought, And the list goes on and on. Search results can also be filtered based on what your preferred search preferences are. Save those preferences for future use, and there's bound to be new listings for you to consider every single day.

Let's say you've found a project that interests you and suits your type. From there, subscribers will be provided with information on submitting dance resumes and reel or self-tap auditions. Or if in-person auditions are taking place, additional information about open call times or how to schedule audition times will also be available. The key is to be prepared and wait, because you never know when the right opportunity will knock.

Open Calls:

For concert dance, freelance projects and company auditions, Post will always notify you if the audition is going to be an open call without any pre-registration, or steps need to be taken before you arrive. Be sure to pay attention to the time limit! Some companies only want to audition a certain amount of dancers based on studio space or time constraints—so it's in your best interest to submit immediately. To register, they will ask you to send in your material (headshot, CV, and dance reel), then contact you if you have been selected to attend the audition.

Agent:

If you're going the agent route, they'll usually present you for initial selection and let you know if you were placed at the audition. It's common for companies to look for a certain body type or aesthetic, so if you don't get invited to audition right away, don't take it personally. Your agent will do his best to get you in the door for the roles that best suit your looks and talents.
