- Models
There are many different types of models, often with variations related to the type of clothing or accessories shown. Some models may choose to focus on a specific type of modeling, while others may switch during their careers based on preferences. If you are a model or aspire to be one, it can be helpful to know what the different types are. In this article, we explain the different types of modeling, what these roles are, and list some related jobs.
Runway Model
A runway model usually works on the catwalk, which is the runway at a fashion show where designers showcase their work, such as a new clothing line. Designers often produce their items to certain standardized sizes, which is why runway models tend to have similar builds and heights. Often, a runway model is required to be at least 5'9 or taller. The type of clothing can be almost anything from intricate winter outfits to lingerie and it depends on what the designer wants
Fashion/Editorial Model
Also known as an editorial model, a fashion model is a person used in popular fashion magazines. You often work with the most prestigious designers to showcase new product lines, one-off products and accessories. As a result, editorial modeling is one of the most selective and can be difficult to get into. These models are often tall and thin, and designers prefer individuals who are the 'whole package' of looks and figures.
Commercial Model
Unlike fashion models, commercial modeling is the least selective, as employers prefer a wide range of figures and looks. Commercial models can display a wide range of products in things such as catalogs and advertising campaigns. You can also work in television and other commercials, where a diverse set of appearances can be attractive to watch. It may be possible to start out as a commercial model and move on to some other type of modeling if that's your ambition.
Fitness Model
As the name suggests, a fitness model is usually very fit physically. You may be somewhat muscular, have an athletic build, and be well-toned. Fitness models are therefore often used to showcase fitness apparel, such as trainers, tracksuits and other sporting gear. A fitness model may also perform certain fitness and workout routines in videos and other media. There is a lot of exercise and training involved in reaching the physique required to become a fitness model.
