Eligibility:

There is no specific qualification or age limit to enter this field. The first step to making an entry is to create a portfolio. It consists of a series of photographs taken by a professional photographer. The portfolio may then be shown to an advertising agency, a model coordination agency, which provides suitable models according to requirements, or a fashion designer. Another way to enter this career is by applying to participate in pageants and beauty pageants sponsored by magazines, clothing manufacturers, cosmetic companies, etc.

There are no set standards of training in this field, and models are generally expected to learn on the job. Training in this sector has been initiated by former models who have set up training schools, though it is mainly confined to Delhi and Mumbai.

The training programs include instruction on beauty care, make-up, hairstyling, diet, exercise, how to walk and how to carry oneself elegantly, etc. These training programs include guidance on how to create contracts and other technicalities. Guidance on portfolio building is also a part of such training programs.

Personal Qualities:

The main attributes needed to become a model are a nice and healthy complexion and shiny hair. The model should be tall, fashion industry criteria for the best model are 5'7" to 6' or 6' plus. For a man, height should be 6' or 6' plus and he should be muscular. Being photogenic is the most important Quality for a model. Also, a good knowledge of acting, a camera-friendly attitude, and a great amount of confidence will reward success in this profession. They should also be open to criticism.
